The Ankle That Wouldn't Heal
Carissa, age 37, and a lover of dance, sprains her left ankle. With a smile on her face, she limps in. Walking is painful and running, nearly unbearable. I examine it. No fracture or severe tear. Good. I move to understand the injury. With my hands on her head, the forces absorbed reveal themselves. Foot, ankle, and shin-all affected. Hip-not too bad. Some old injuries here and there. Piece of cake.
Three to four treatments now, but no progress. Bizarre. These types of things are usually treated easily. Physical injury by physical forces. My specialty.
I must look closer, inspect more thoroughly.
Another treatment. More waiting, more patience. More talkless dialogue-my hands, her body.
A density begins to reveals itself. It's as if the tissues are filled with some hard substance, pushing from the inside out, not allowing anything to budge. I know this texture. I have felt it before. Something non-physical is in our way.
"Carissa, ever talk with anyone? About your feelings."
"No, not really. Why? Think it'd help?"
Eleven months pass and no word. Then one day, she walks in. Another ankle sprain, only this time, the other foot.
But wait! Now, her body seems lighter, much lighter. There exists a new flexibility in her tissues that was absent before. Fixing the ankle was a snap, this time! Forty minutes later, treatment complete, she walks away, feeling the ankle pain nearly instantly dissolve.
Turns out, that during those months, Carissa did seek counsel. An expert therapist had helped her to discover inner pains she thought had vanished. In time, working with those feelings, Carissa was able to lighten the emotional weight within her. As a result, her body responded by softening and gaining new flexibility. Osteopathy could now easily issue cure.
The emotional hindering the physical. The interdependence of our inner worlds.
